How many training budgets have been slashed due to ineffectiveness? Here in Asia, training is never high on the priority list. Many organizations or HR will cite poor ROI or effectiveness overall. Other than basic job or specialized skills or activities, most organizations now switched to computer led training. While those are fine for general awareness and compliance reasons, research has shown that they are also almost ineffective as well.
One thing here at Brandt Learning & Development is that we always believe in Learning, not Training. Also, we know that in any professional outfit, if you want the desired result, you simulate and simulate until you get them. Pilots are the first to mind, but you’ll realize that doctors do it too. Of course the military uses simulations as well.
We ran a Celemi Decision Base demo day recently at Pullman Hotel, Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and the results from participants were not unexpected. All enjoyed the session and the learning summary was insightful – collaboration, communication and creativity. Each team made their plans based on their understanding and reading of the situation, and set their own objectives. It was quite clear that things don’t happen as expected and many times, we fail to communicate properly. Even among teams, there was miscommunication and understanding each role’s objective along with the grand objective was easier said than done.
Yet, we all learned that it was key. It was not easy when each department misunderstood the objectives or was not factored properly into the strategy. Blunders happened, losses happened and the teams went off-track.
“We didn’t coordinate between production and sales.”
“Our initial forecast and assumptions did not include the market size.”
“We continually produced and purchased raw material without consulting our production limits.”
“We made more than we could have sold.”
“If we made that extra sale, we would have been in the black.”
“We lost a lot of money but we’ll make it back next year!!!”
Thankfully, this was a simulation and it was clear that most teams were bouncing back. To the participants dismay however, time was up. Typically, a full Decision Base simulation will take at minimum 2-3 days and in such a scenario, there will be customization to the material to suit the organization (manufacturing, services, hospitality, medical, etc) as well as more “unexpected” outcomes to further create uncertainty.
All in all, it was good fun and there is where all the learning was. Unlike other training sessions, you can be sure all the participants will not be falling asleep or waiting for the tea-break or lunch time. If you’re looking to help your teams and departments work closer and pull together towards your organization’s objective, give Celemi Decision Base a shot. It will definitely have a noticeable impact on your bottom line.
