To many, at the end (or beginning depending on how you count it) 0f the second decade of the second millennium – ending in 2019 and beginning in 2020, the word VUCA which stands for Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity and Ambiguity was a bit overused. It started as a government (Pentagon specifically) term but eventually, all business leaders and consultants used it because it summed up the turbulent times. People got used to it and the uncertainties became normal, or near normal.
The COVID-19 pandemic showed up and told us otherwise. I like the term coined by Aviad Goz of N.E.W.S.® Navigation during our webinar – Super-VUCA. A perfect storm so to speak. It is unlike any other event before. It was a global pandemic, an economic crisis, a stock-market crash, an oil war and a global political crisis and global upheaval of everything else — all in one combined event, simultaneously hitting almost every country in the world. Work-from-home has disrupted and devastated, workers, organizations and governments. When I was younger, I used to talk to my grand-aunts and grand-parents about how they survived World War II, hiding in the jungles of Malaya from the Japanese. Would we be talking to our grand-children about this global disruption and I daresay, economic devastation of 2020? Quite likely because like everything that has come before, we will persevere and come out of this. How we do it and how we emerge depends on each one of us.
That is one of the reasons for our timely Webinar. Right now, almost every organization is affected in one way or another. The N.E.W.S.®️ Navigation program however seems perfectly designed for a time like this. The guided four compass points are very useful for teams and organizations to inherently take a step back, evaluate where they are, what are the core strengths and values and then begin to strategize the first few steps and then the direction. I believe it is very applicable to both teams and organizations as well as individuals. We had around 75 participants that definitely learned something from our webinar. Questions asked and the poll accurately sums up the need of participants to be able to plan what the next few steps are. These are short-term immediate steps but they are crucial survival steps.
Obviously, more is needed so we are working hard to put out a series along the lines of Leadership in the next few weeks. We will be announcing more in the time to come.
I will leave readers with one of the key messages of leading in times like this is that we need to find within ourselves that hidden ability – we all have it. Like a mother who could suddenly lift a car when it went over her child is the example of the kind of resilience, strength and determination that we have within ourselves. Tap into it consciously and we will emerge stronger – individually, as a team and as an organization.
